BikeSafe

Motorcyclists form just 1% of road users, but a disproportionately high 20% of killed and seriously injured casualties. However, with additional training (both attitudinal and technical), motorcyclists can significantly enhance their safety.

BikeSafe is a national initiative that aims to reduce motorcyclist casualties by engaging with full licence holders to:

  • Understand and analyse why motorcycle collisions happen.
  • Discuss and demonstrate how riders can stay safe.
  • Manage on-road risk.
  • Offer potential solutions to the most obvious and common collision scenarios.

This is done, for example, by looking at the tried and tested techniques of emergency service riders.

There are fewer reasons for crashes than you might imagine with five strong themes emerging throughout the country:

  • Filtering
  • Junctions
  • Cornering
  • Overtaking
  • Group riding

BikeSafe also highlights the benefits of, and the need for, proper accredited training - effectively bridging the gap into approved training. Approximately 5500 people attend BikeSafe sessions annually.
