Local agencies make a stand at the Cheshire Show

EMERGENCY services and local authorities showed a united front for creating safer roads for the first time ever at the Cheshire Show (17th and 18th July, 2007).

Launched April this year, the Cheshire Safer Roads Partnership, demonstrated its new combined approach to saving lives on the roads by presenting a joint road safety stand to the public.

Lee Murphy, Partnership Manager said:

"By having all the services together projecting one key message simultaneously, we are emphasising that what we have to say is very important - we are telling the public that road death and injury is a major problem on our roads and that we need their help to ensure they are safe using them."

In the agencies' stand against road death and injury, the organisers have adopted a more challenging approach with the shows visitors.

Lisa Lafferty, Communications Manager, said:

"Traditionally, road safety stands have been about what local services do to make roads safer. But on this occasion, visitors may be surprised to be asked what they are doing about road safety. This is because road safety is not something done to you but something that's done by you, as a road user and member of the community."

Visitors will be invited to pinpoint roads of their concern on a large scale map of the Cheshire-area and explain what they perceive the problems to be and asked how they think they may be able to help.

The rest of the stand will feature a range of activities and competitions including Spot the Defect on an unsafe to drive vehicle with the chance to win gift vouchers, a road safety trailer bursting with information and freebies, and a one stop non-alcoholic ‘services' café for visitors to take a ‘rest-stop', have a free drink, and receive safety advice by members of the multi-agency team.

On the stand its-self will be a wide skills-set of road safety professionals ready to answer the public's questions, including Traffic Police Officers, Engineers, Highway Officers and Road Safety Officers.
