Red Routes in Halton

Across Halton, 5 routes have been identified as roads which carry the highest risk to road users of suffering a potentially fatal crash

Each route will be marked with red road signs – classifying them as Red Routes.

Cheshire County Council, Halton Borough Council and Warrington Borough Council have each identified the roads to be included in the ‘red routes’ scheme based on a detailed analysis of the road collision and casualty data. The Red Routes scheme gives greatest priority to those routes which are experiencing the more severe collisions resulting in serious injury or death.

What does it mean to me?

In an ideal world every single road safety problem could be solved by the work that agencies such as the Police, Fire and Rescue Service and Local Authorities do. However, while they can make huge avenues into saving lives, they can’t do it all.

We all have a big part to play in creating ‘safer roads’ - each individual needs to ‘do their bit’ and it all starts with the decisions you make about how you use your roads.

The Red Route nearest to you is your local road and it is your responsibility to make it safer.

What can I do?

• Belt up – wear your seatbelt front and back at all times
• Wake up – if you’re tired, stop and have a rest
• Sober up – don’t drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, even some prescription or over the counter drugs
• Slow up – watch your speed. Observe speed limits, weather conditions and the environment
• Look up – watch out for other vehicles and pedestrians
• Sharpen up – have regular eye tests
• Shut up – don’t use your mobile phone while driving
• Back up – keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front
• Check up – maintain your vehicle regularly, including checking your tyre pressure and tread
