Speed Awareness Course

Who runs the course?

The course is run by Cheshire Police using appropriately qualified DSA driving instructors.

What does the course involve?

The course is classroom based and is designed to explore why drivers have exceeded the speed limit and to provide guidance to prevent recurrence.

At the end of the course, participants should be able to identify:

What causes drivers to speed
  • The disadvantages of speeding
  • The consequences of misusing speed

There is no formal written test, however, you will be expected to make a positive contribution to the course.

How long does the course last?

The course runs for approximately 4.5 hours.

What happens after I have returned the application form?

Your details will be passed to the course provider, Cheshire Police, who will write to you with full details of the course including the booking arrangements.

When will the course take place?

As part of the course booking process, you will be given the opportunity to choose the most convenient date from the courses available. However, it should be noted that you will have to complete the course within 4 months from the date of the speeding offence. Failure to do so will render the offer invalid and the matter will be referred back to the Police to consider summons proceedings.

What if I have special needs?

You will be asked prior to attending the course if you have any special needs. The course provider will cater for most needs with the exception of an interpreter. In this instance, you will be expected to bring your own.

Payment

Payment will be requested by Cheshire Police as part of the course booking process and must be made in full 3 weeks prior to you course. Failure to do so will render the offer invalid and the matter will be referred back to the Police will consider summons proceedings.

Driving licence

You will be required to produce a valid photocard driving licence at the start of the course. If you do not hold a photocard style driving licence, you will need to provide your passport or other suitable photo identification (e.g., work ID card, student card) in addition to your paper licence.

Failure to do so will disqualify you from participating on the course and the matter will be referred back to the Police to consider summons proceedings.

What happens once I have successfully completed the course?

You will receive notification from Cheshire Police stating that no further action will be taken in respect of the offence.
